You may be wondering, especially if you have never owned a hamster before whether you really need to buy a hamster cage for you little pet to live in. Perhaps you are thinking that you could make a makeshift home for your new pet, perhaps using cardboard boxes and a little bit of creativity.
Well, this is a path that has been travelled by many in the past so you can consider yourself not alone. Unfortunately this route has almost always ended in disaster for one simple reason. Your pet hamster does not know he (or she) is a pet. Hamsters also have an irresistable need to gnaw on something. So, if you do not house your hamster in a proper secure hamster cage you will almost certainly find, after just one night, that you hamster has gnawed his way to freedom and has literally disappeared completely.
This situation is distressing for both you as the new owner, and ultimately your pet as they are not really bred to be capable of living successfully in a wild state, so do you and your pet a favor and buy a hamster cage.
